Dear Supporters of Lane Tech Girls’ Swim & Dive,
The Lane Tech Girls’ Swim and Dive Team has a rich history of success within CPS and beyond. But with over 45 members, it is an expensive team to manage.
Lane Tech’s 4,500-member student body reflects the cultural and social diversity of Chicago. Our students represent every Chicago ward, and nearly 40% come from low-income households. Our team reflects this demographic.
CPS funds alone are not sufficient to support our team, and there is little funding for the equipment required to train and keep our athletes as healthy as possible during this grueling workout season, and in addition, the Lane Tech pool is one of the oldest in CPS, requiring costly updates and regular maintenance.
CPS funds one Varsity coach and one JV coach for the entire team, regardless of the size, and only for a limited number of hours. Two coaches for 45 athletes, and for the limited number of hours allotted by CPS, simply does not allow athletes the personalized coaching and proper conditioning that is needed to support a team of this size and caliber.
The Boosters have stepped up where CPS has been unable, providing the Team with training equipment like kick boards and massage guns; updating the pool with touch pads and diving blocks; and paying for additional staff including assistant coaches, dive coaches and conditioning coaches.
But the Team’s needs are still great. With no expanded funding, we will need to continue to fund coaches yearly. We still need timing clocks and other equipment for hosting meets. And we want to help support the Team in other ways, through funding social events for our hard-working athletes, commemorating their achievements and by providing certain financial aid for athletes who need our help in order to fully participate in all that being on a Team brings with it.
