Dryland Announcements

Swimmers and Parents,

We’re seeing great progress and getting stronger in the weight room already! Below are a few topics I wanted to touch on to get us ready for more success in our next phase of strength training.

Gym shoes! It’s important that we are wearing proper sneakers any time we are in a weight room. Crocs or shoes that aren’t laced up, are not acceptable in the weight room for safety issues. I’ve seen a bunch of our athletes with high tops on which I’m ok with as long as they are fully laced and tied. Otherwise, we run the risk of injury to our feet and ankles. Parents, please note, lifting in bare feet has its benefits and I still train this way personally, but in a school environment and with this many people in the room, we want to make sure that our feet are protected as much as possible.

Water Bottles! Bring them with you to the weight room! Have them filled up before you head in so there is no interruption to your training.

Soreness! Expect to be a little sore. This is normal, especially when you are learning new movements, increasing weight, reps or intervals. Soreness means your body is learning to adapt and ultimately is getting stronger.

Pain! If you’re in pain in the weight room (not to be confused with soreness), let me know right away! We can make adjustments. If you’re experiencing pain or extreme soreness when you get home, before you reach for an ice pack, consider doing some light stretching, CARS and/or heating the area. Blood flow is important, especially for areas that are inflamed and icing restricts blood flow. For more on this, please see this article from the Doctor who originally coined the term RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevate) and has since recanted his position after tons of newer research.

First Week of School

We have a number of announcements to make so please read through them all!

  • Standard Weekly practice schedule is in place! You can find that schedule here. You can also find the week 3 specific schedule here.
  • For 6am practices, we start the workout at 6am!! That means you should arrive at the school at 5:45am. Door K8 is what you will use. It is the door that goes through the cafeteria.
  • Please make sure you are communicating with the coaches via your school email about any issues with attending your assigned practice. Even if you’ve had a conversation with the coaches in person, we need an email confirming any absences or changes.
  • Tuesday’s Meet at Downers Grove South
    • All swimmers have been given a permission sheet to have their 8th period teacher sign. Please make sure that is done TOMORROW! Swimmers will hold on to the signed permission slip as a reference.
    • Bus is leaving at 2:45pm SHARP! This means that you should be leaving your 8th period class at 2:35 and heading straight to the pool.
    • Downers Grove South is at 1436 Norfolk Street, Downers Grove, IL 60516. Meet starts at 5pm. We would love a cheering section!
    • We will assume that everyone will be taking the bus back to Lane with the team. If that is not the case, we will need to hear from the swimmer and parent/guardian to confirm that a parent/guardian is driving them home.
    • Entries have been posted
  • Saturday’s JV Invite at Highland Park
    • Entries should be released by Wednesday afternoon at the very latest, we realize this is a tight turnaround, but we have not received the meet file from Highland Park (it is also their first year coaching).
    • The bus is scheduled to leave from Lane at 7:45am, so please arrive at 7:30 at the very latest!
    • Again, the assumption is that everyone will be on the bus back to Lane with the team!
    • Highland Park is at 433 Vine Ave, Highland Park, IL 60035.
  • Everyone NOT attending the JV Invite has practice from 8-12 at Lane.

Gold vs. Green Meet

I wanted to send out a few reminders regarding Friday’s Gold vs. Green meet.

  • Athlete arrival time is 2:45pm (this is a change from the original schedule, we are shifting everything up so that we can leave the building at a reasonable hour)
  • If you’ve volunteered to time, please arrive by 3:45 to get everyone situated (and thank you so much for helping out!!)
  • Meet start is at 4pm. Parents are encouraged to attend to cheer on the athletes!
  • Parent Meeting will occur immediately after the conclusion of the meet in Room 210. The meeting should not take more than 45 minutes.
  • Entries for the meet are posted on the lineups page on the website! (under Meets in the menu)
    • If there is anything that looks wrong with your name or events, please reach out ASAP.
  • We will be splitting up the team into 2 separate teams (Gold vs. Green)
    • You will warm up, sit, and compete together as either the Gold or Green team
    • Please keep it a fun, competitive environment. We will be scoring the meet to see who comes out on top!
    • Our two captains will be our “coaches” for the meet. Nora will be leading the Gold team and Delaney will be leading the Green team
